Why Do We Care About MultiCare?

Who is MultiCare?

MultiCare has expanded since our last negotiations:

MultiCare continues to prioritize its expansion over investing in frontline healthcare workers.

MultiCare Health System (MHS) is licensed to operate 2,926 inpatient hospital beds across 13 hospitals and more than 300 clinics in five regions, in Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. MultiCare employs over 28,000 workers. Recently, MHS focused on expanding:

  • 8 outpatient surgical sites,

  • 6 free-standing emergency departments (and more on the way),

  • home health, hospice, and multiple urgent care, primary care and multi-specialty clinics,

  •  2 foundations, a wholly owned accountable care organization, and 5 subsidiaries located throughout Washington,

  • and a new joint venture with Kootenai Health, Prairie Medical Campus.

What Is MultiCare Spending Money On?

MultiCare expanding into new regions rather than reinvesting into its existing ones:

  • Buying one of the few remaining standalone private hospitals in the state: Overlake Medical Center and Clinics in Bellevue, Washington(valued at about $1 billion)

  • Joint venture with Kootenai Health of a 30 acre medical campus, Prairie Medical Campus in Idaho

  • Buying 30 acres of land near Spokane for $15.7 million!

MultiCare investing into new beds rather than its staff:

  • Built new freestanding Emergency Departments in Bremerton and Lacey, and in the process of opening one in Lynwood

  • Expanding the existing Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital campus and relocating several pediatric clinics to a new medical pavilion in East Pierce County

  • Adding 160 acute beds to MultiCare Good Sam and adding 32 beds to Tacoma General

  • Two new Indigo Urgent care in Yelm, WA and Hayden ID

  • Opening up a new inpatient behavioral health unit at Deaconess

  • MultiCare rebranding

  • Launched two new institutes: the MultiCare Cancer Institute and the MultiCare Neuroscience Institute
